My Rating

This book kicks off a fantasy romance duology, and to be honest, I have very mixed feelings about it. The premise is intriguing. The story follow a young woman named Bristol, who gets recruited by a kingdom of Fae to help them on a dangerous mission. She’s shocked to learn about the world of Fae and the magic she may possess. Despite her hesitation, she makes a bargain with King Tyghan to find her father.
A lot happens in the story, a bit too much if you ask me, and the plot didn’t move at a pace I enjoyed. The chapters are long, and the romance was definitely a slow burn. Tyghan and Bristol have strong chemistry, and I personally just wanted them to give in to it. That’s more of a personal preference, though, since I’m not a slow-burn lover. Even though the pacing felt slow, I do think every chapter served a purpose, and I’m not sure the author could have shortened the book without losing important context for the plot.
The world-building pulled me in, though it confused me at times. That tends to happen with heavier fantasies and romantasy books. This is definitely a story you need to pay close attention to—otherwise, it’s easy to lose track of what’s happening. Still, the plot remains gripping and entertaining. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, though Bristol isn’t necessarily my favorite protagonist. I really liked Tyghan and the small glimpses we got of Bristol’s sisters. Some of the side characters also intrigued me, and I suspect a few of them are hiding secrets. I’m curious to see what unfolds in the next book.
“A lifetime of question marks had hooked together in a chain and dragged her to this reality.”
My main issue with the story, however, was Tyghan’s hypocrisy. I can’t go into detail without spoilers, but I really dislike when a character judges someone for their actions and then does something very similar or completely contradicts what they claim to believe. That always frustrates me.
Overall, I’ll definitely continue with the duology because I’d like to see how things conclude. I enjoyed the writing style and most of the characters, though I hope the final book moves at a faster pace. While I wouldn’t call this an amazing read, it’s an interesting story with a great blend of Fae and forbidden romance, which are two things I’m a sucker for. As for spice, I’d rate it around a 2.5 out of 5. It’s open-door, but not extremely steamy in my opinion.
