About The Book
For almost two years, Adam has kept his affair with Kelly Summers a secret, but everything changes when her body is discovered at the couple’s lake house and Adam is arrested on suspicion of murder. Sarah now finds herself facing her most challenging case yet when she vows to defend her husband–a man accused of murdering his mistress. While Adam is certainly guilty of sleeping with Kelly, the question remains: Is he guilty of killing her too?

My Rating
I wasn’t sure I was going to love this story since cheating plays a big role in the plot, and that’s usually something I don’t enjoy in books. Even though I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy the plot, I’d heard great things about the book, and since I love mysteries, I decided to give it a try.
Unfortunately, the story and writing style didn’t fully click with me. Since I didn’t care about the characters, I didn’t care how the story ended. And despite finding the mystery interesting, I figured out several of the plot twists fairly early on, and sadly, the story was somewhat predictable, which probably hindered my enjoyment of the book.
Sarah, the main female character, is portrayed as a cold, independent attorney, but I appreciated the moments where her armor cracked and we got to see her more vulnerable side. But honestly, I wasn’t a fan of Adam, Sarah’s husband. He wrestled with his conscience over the affair, yet he blamed Sarah for all the problems in their marriage instead of taking any responsibility. I got annoyed at his lack of accountability in the story.
“We all have our own truth and everything outside that truth is just a story.”
I wouldn’t say the story is necessarily exciting, and I found the pacing to be quite slow. Still, I can see how the plot could really captivate some mystery/thriller newbies and keep them guessing with so many suspects and twists along the way. But for me, the book lacked suspense, and I never felt eager to pick it up, so needless to say, I struggled to get through it. As for the ending, it aimed to shock, but it didn’t surprise me. I guessed it early on, and it felt unoriginal, which left me underwhelmed.
Overall, I don’t think I’d recommend this one to seasoned mystery/thriller readers, but if you’re just getting into the genre, it might work better for you. I don’t think Jeneva Rose’s storytelling style is for me personally, since I didn’t find the book engaging enough to hold my attention. Despite my thoughts that it was predictable, others may find it to be a real page-turner.
