About The Book
A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis. Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she’s ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back what’s hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territory…alone with the wolf.

My Rating

This is a marriage-of-convenience story between a werewolf and a vampire. There’s also a mystery woven in, and it’s mostly a slow burn. I’m always down for a steamy vampire story, so I predicted this one would be right up my alley. And while I did enjoy it, I’ll admit it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, and a few parts of the story were frustrating.

Our female main character, Misery, has spent most of her life in the human world after the vampire council sent her there as a peace offering between humans and vampires. She’s stubborn, guarded, and tries hard not to show her emotions. She agrees to marry Lowe, the alpha of a powerful werewolf pack, to strengthen ties between their people.

What I love, though, is that Misery has her own agenda in this marriage; she’s searching for her best friend. The mystery aspect pulled me in, and I found myself piecing things together right alongside her. There are a few twists that I didn’t see coming, which kept me hooked and eager to keep reading.

“Her presence soothes him more than a full-moon run.”

I enjoyed the romance a lot, even as someone who doesn’t usually love slow burns. But my main issue was with Lowe. Even though I liked him as a character and love interest, his constant pushing Misery away and disregarding her choices didn’t sit right with me. I really dislike when one character is practically shouting what they want and the other refuses to believe it, insisting they don’t actually mean it. That’s a story aspect this book leaned on, and it didn’t work for me.

As for the story as a whole, I expected it to be steamier. That’s not to say it wasn’t spicy—it definitely was—but it wasn’t all spice, with no plot. I think there was a good balance between steamy scenes and moments that moved the plot forward. Still, if you’re someone who doesn’t like spice, you might want to skip this book. However, you could technically avoid the spicy chapters without losing track of the story.

Overall, Ali Hazelwood has yet to disappoint me, and her books are ones I can’t seem to put down. It was such a compelling story, with vampires and spice—two of my favorite things. However, there was a certain plot point in the romance that I assume was supposed to be a shock, but it was very obvious where the author was going with it. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the writing, which makes this book a win, in my opinion.
